The well-known historian and geographer Jamal al-Din al-Qarshi (late 13th – early 14th century), in his famous work Mulhaqat al-Surah, emphasizes that the city of Uzgen in the 10th–12th centuries was one of the most important political and administrative centers of the Karakhanid state. He also describes Uzgen as a center of Islamic culture, a city of advanced scholarship, Islamic education, and architecture, noting that at that time the city had mosques, madrasas, and mausoleums. In the 1980s, archaeological excavations were carried out on the southern side of the Uzgen minaret. According to archaeologists, the remains of the foundation and walls of a medieval madrasa building were discovered at this site. These ruins represent a temporarily soil-conserved area.
